Update: A Guide to Financial Regulatory Reform Proposals
Now that the House has passed Rep. Barney Frank’s overhaul of U.S. financial regulations, we’ve decided to update our handy chart that details the bill’s approach to key problem areas in the financial system.
In the days before the House voted last Friday, leading Democrats tinkered with the bill, ultimately producing some significant changes.
In particular, pay attention to the substantial sharpening of rules for credit rating companies. Some loopholes we previously identified have now been closed.

If passed in the Senate, Frank’s little-noticed measures to rein in the rating companies would force the most significant overhaul of the credit rating industry to date.
We’ve also included some last-minute tweaks made to the Consumer Financial Protection Agency, a newly proposed government office considered the keystone of the Wall Street reform package.
